hi just so you know the media and internet lied to you.
being a bitch isn’t cool, being unkind isn’t tough, and aspiring to be petty is sad.
life is really really hard and the only way we’re gonna get through it with a little bit of joy is together.
enjoying hurting people’s feelings is a sign of deep unhappiness and i hope one day you can heal and spend your time loving the people who deserve it and getting away from the ones who don’t

♥ 10411 day agoEvery single time I hear someone referring to a Jewish person as ‘white’ another little piece of my soul dies.
As a non-American Jew, the first time I ever heard Jews being referred to as white was when I was a full grown adult watching an American reality show. I FOR REAL thought they were making that shit up in order to generate buzz and get people talking about the controversy! That’s how foreign the notion was to me. Imagine my shock and horror to discover that THIS IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN THE UNITED STATES.
It’s the way that referring to Jews as ‘white’ ERASES white people’s antisemitism, it erases our persecution at the hands of white people, it erases our suffering, it erases the OTHERING that Jews had suffered for CENTURIES from actual white people.
Based on what the skin tone of some Jews in a few places might afford them SO LONG AS NO ONE KNOWS THEY’RE JEWISH.
If you have to hide your real identity in order to enjoy the privileges of being perceived as white, YOU’RE NOT WHITE (this is true for Jews just like it is true for other white-passing People of Color).
White passing is not the same as white.
WHITE PASSING IS NOT THE SAME AS WHITE.
Jews are NOT white. Not a single one of us. Not even the ones who can pass as white, let alone all of the Jews who can’t.
@nettlewool and @sorrymyrabbisaidno, regarding the question of white people converting to Judaism, before I answer this, I just wanna take a second to say that to me it’s pretty clear that “white” is a social perception. This term takes one particular group of people who are of the “right” ancestry and confers onto them a set of privileges that other people are excluded from, and it uses white skin as the marker for this ancestry, BUT white skin isn’t enough. A Chinese person with the whitest of skins is not “white” because they have the wrong ancestry. A person of African descent who for whatever reason looks white is still likely to be lynched at a White Supremacy convention the second their ancestry is discovered, despite the fact that their skin color did not suddenly change. Similarly, a Jewish person is also excluded from being considered white regardless of whether their skin looks white or not.
Jews by birth, even white looking ones, are of Levantine descent. We come from Israel, in the Middle East. From West Asia, if you wanna look at it on a continental level. We’re not white because we’re not Europeans, we have therefore ALWAYS been OTHERED when in Europe (and not just there). Some Jews being exiled to Europe for close to 2000 years didn’t change that, since for the most part Jews did not marry non-Jews, both in order to preserve their culture, identity, religion, values, etc., and because of antisemitism making non-Jewish Europeans look at Jews as lowly (you have to remember that when the Romans exiled Jews from Israel, they brought our ancestors to be slaves across the empire), as undesirable, then later also as Christ-killers. Who wants to marry that? So despite the many centuries of certain Jewish communities living in Europe, Jews there never came to be of European descent.
Even if there weren’t many, there must have still been converts to Judaism in Europe along these centuries. And when they converted, as far as Judaism is concerned? Converts are FULLY Jewish and they are no lesser Jews in any way than those who are Jewish by birth. When people converted, they also married into the Jewish people. So their kids? Were 50% Jewish. Their grandkids? 75% Jewish. Their great grandkids? 87.5% and so on… So over time, the Levantine Jewish ancestry was still preserved. And the converts? Judaism already accepted them as fully Jewish, and at the same time, the largely antisemitic European society would have rejected them and treated them with the same kind of antisemitism that born Jews suffered, too. In other words, I think that historically, there is no question that conversion to Judaism for Europeans was an act of relinquishing their ‘whiteness’, their privilege as a part of the dominant non-Jewish majority in Europe, and in that sense, I don’t think converts to Judaism are ‘white’ (as a concept) either.
Does their ancestry change? No. But if someone looked at them leading a Jewish life, married to a Jewish spouse, raising Jewish kids, integrated into a Jewish community, likely also wearing Jewish symbols and clothes, these converts would have been easily assumed to be white-passing Jews by birth, and as such, they would not have been perceived or treated as white. If they were discovered to be people of European descent who had converted to Judaism? They’d be seen as race traitors, and would still suffer the same kind of antisemitism all Jews did, possibly even worse, because they chose Jewishness. So again, their ancestry might not have changed and could never change, but they chose for their descendants to have Levantine ancestry, and they chose to embrace and integrate themselves into a culture, a religion and a community that was Levantine, and for all intents and purposes, they were also now excluded from the group of people recognized as white and treated with privileges based on that. Which is why I think, despite their ancestry not changing, not even converts to Judaism are white.
In that sense, I think converts are a bit like adopted kids. Those children’s biological parents will never stop being linked to them biologically, but the actual family that raises them, that they experience the world with, that people perceive them as a part of, that determines their socioeconomic status and what advantages or disadvantages they’ll have, that’s the adoptive family, not the biological one. So while adoption doesn’t change your DNA, it does change and determine a big part of who you are, what your identity is, what experiences you have in this world, and how you’re perceived and treated.
Now do converts of European descent still have certain privileges afforded by their white skin? Yes. The same kind that white-passing Jews have, meaning converts get to enjoy them so long as they’re not recognized as Jews. And as I said before, if your whiteness depends on a denial of your identity, you’re not white. Yes, despite still being of European descent.
And in this context, I am going to ask you: if there was a person of European descent who had converted to Judaism and was present at the Tree of Life synagogue on Shabbat, October 27, 2018 in Pittsburgh, were they safe from the White Supremacist shooter thanks to their skin color or ancestry? No. All of the attendants, whether Jews by birth or by conversion, all they were to him was nothing but a target.

Hamas forces indisputably violated multiple laws of war on October 7 in taking Israelis hostage and raping, torturing and directly targeting civilians, as well continuing to attack Israeli population centers with rockets. Years of intelligence assessments and media reports have shown that Hamas also commits war crimes by using human shields for its weapons and command centers and by purposely putting military capabilities in protected sites like hospitals, mosques and schools.
On the other hand, nothing I have seen shows that the Israel Defense Forces are not following the laws of wars in Gaza, particularly when the charges that the IDF is committing war crimes so often come too quickly for there to have been an examination of the factors that determine whether an attack, and the resulting civilian casualties, are lawful. The factors that need to be assessed are the major dimensions of the most commonly agreed to international humanitarian law principles: military necessity, proportionality, distinction, humanity and honor.
President Joe Biden and multiple European countries, including the UK, Germany and France, are supporting Israel’s self-defense even as they express concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Though Gaza’s legal status is unresolved under international law, Israel needs no permission to enter the territory and resort to using force in order to wage defensive operations because Israel’s right to immediate and unilateral self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter is universally recognized.
Israel has pledged to obey international law, and one of its cornerstones is proportionality. The concept is often misunderstood to allow only for equal numbers of civilian casualties on both sides, with any lopsided numbers considered disproportionate. But proportionality is actually a requirement to take into account how much civilian harm is anticipated in comparison to the expected concrete and direct military advantage, according to UN protocols. In other words, a high civilian death count in Jabalya could potentially be considered legal under international law so long as the military objective is of high value. The Israel Defense Forces said the intended target in this case was the senior Hamas commander who oversaw all military operations in the northern Gaza; neutralizing him is an objective that most likely clears the proportional bar. Furthermore, Israel pointed out that the loss of life was compounded because Hamas had built tunnels that weakened the targeted structure that then collapsed in the strike.
The attack also passes muster on the level of “military necessity,” the principle that the action was necessary to pursue an allowed military goal (killing enemy troops), rather than an illegal goal (causing civilians to suffer). The IDF has said that its aim is to remove the rockets, ammunitions depot, power and transportation systems Hamas has embedded within their civilian population. So far, a number of military experts have assessed that Israel appears to be trying to follow the law of armed conflict in its Gaza campaign.
